Tuesday’s short-list for the opener couldn’t have been worse as none even made the top four, with a low number overcoming the trends in a big field.
I’m looking at the Vintage Stakes today, where the draw was less important!
2.50 Vintage Stakes Channel 4
Firth Of Fifth – Won last time out but has had too many outings for an ideal winner.
Baycat – Unplaced last time out not ideal, and not in first four of betting.
Instalment – Unplaced last time out not ideal, and not in first four of betting.
Lord Shanakill – In the first four of betting, but not many arrive via Royal Ascot.
Orizaba – In the first four of betting, but not many arrive via Royal Ascot.
Ryehill Dreamer – Last time out winner and fancied in the market, trainer said “ground was far from ideal” on soft in Ireland so may improve on faster here. Tommy Stack’s last 15 runners in the GB all failed though.
Sayif – Yet to win and only Ekraar had such a profile, yard struggling for winners.
Set Sail – One race in which trainer has struggled, but last time out winner is a big positive in this. Likely to be outside first four in betting.
Shaweel – Trainer has done well in this but had one too many outings than is required and third last time out.
Soul City – Another trainer to have disappointed in this, but last time out victory in Newmarket maiden bodes well. Likely to be outside first four in betting.
Westphalia – (non-runner)
SHORT-LIST: Not many fit all the trends so something might have to give, a good example of having to be versatile.
Have to admit I'm not confident, but the last time out win record is the strongest trend so I’m going with:
Ryehill Dreamer – Soul City – Set Sail
